An Early Day Motion is the term given to a motion which has not been given a date for debate in the Commons.  It is way for Members of Parliament to record their views on a subject and to canvass support from their colleagues.  The majority of EDMs are never considered for debate but they can attract a great deal of publicity and many people regard them as a gauge of opinion.
